Winter Programs Are Heating Up

The Spirit of Woodlan has a lot of members who just can’t get enough of band and guard, so many of them turned right around after marching band and joined the winter programs. This year, the Winter Guard and Winter Winds programs have been keeping these kids busy.

Woodlan Winter Guard started practicing for their 2024 season at the end of November.  This year, the show’s title is “As the Days Grow Shorter.” The guard will be performing to music about winter, and their musical selections include moments of Vivaldi’s “Winter” from his “Four Season” piece as well as moments of “Let It Go.” The membership in Winter Guard this year almost tripled with 17 members participating this season! Winter Guard will be competing in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association once again.

The schedule of competitions for Winter Guard will be:

January 27, 2024: Snider High School

February 3, 2024: Anderson High School

February 24, 2024: Carroll High School

March 9, 2024: IHSCGA Winter Guard Divisional Finals at Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis

Woodlan Winter Winds also began practicing for their 2024 season at the end of November.  Woodlan will be competing in Indiana Percussion Association’s Winter Winds division for the second time this season. Unlike Winter Percussion, which focuses mainly on percussion instruments, Winter Winds also includes wind instruments and resembles an indoor marching band. The title of the 2024 show is “The Other Side”.  The show will take the audience on a trip down to New Orleans with jazz and blues tunes. The ensemble will play portions of New Orleans classics, such as “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Just A Closer Walk with Thee”, as well as “Friends on the Other Side” from Disney’s Princess and the Frog and “House of the Rising Sun” by the Animals.  The membership this season remained similar to last year with 26 participating members.

The schedule of competitions for Winter Winds will be:

February 10, 2024: Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis

February 24, 2024: Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis

March 9, 2024: Prelims at Westfield High School

March 23, 2024: Winds Finals at Avon High School

Up first for competition is Winter Guard, who head into competition this Saturday, January 27th at Snider High School. They will be competing in the Festival Class, which begins at 12:28pm. Woodlan will perform at 1:03pm, and their class will conclude at 1:38pm. Awards will be held at 2:55pm.  Please come out and cheer the Winter Guard on this weekend!
